Sirai House is found within the Borana Conservancy, located in the Laikipia district in the central-east Rift Valley province of Kenya, on the lower slopes of Mount Kenya. More than 14,000 hectares in size (35,000 acres), the Conservancy is just 27 kilometres (17 miles) north of the equator and has an average altitude of around 2 000 metres (6,560 feet) – which means that year round the weather is warm during the day and cool at night.
The Story of Sirai House
For a few years, we searched Kenya for the perfect site and climate to build a contemporary East African lodge drawing inspiration from the beautiful landscapes and cultures of Kenya. A serendipitous meeting with Michael Dyer in 2007, a third generation member of a well-known Kenyan family who established the Borana Conservancy Ranch, was the seed from which the Sirai project grew.
We became partners in the Conservancy and the house was completed in 2012 by a team of artisan builders and craftsmen, using predominately locally sourced and natural materials.
Sirai takes its name from the Maasai for euphorbia tree which, along with ancient wild olive trees and indigenous cedars dot the ridge on which the house sits. The location of the house, at one of the highest points in the Borana Conservancy and at the foot of Mount Kenya, was chosen for its breath-taking views ensuring that the stunning scenery is visible from every room and angle.
To the North there are panoramic views across Lewa Downs and the country’s northern frontier towards Samburu, westwards across the vast and un-spoilt expanse of the private Borana Conservancy and southwards to the ancient forests and the snow tipped massif of Mount Kenya.
How to get there
There are twice daily flights from the UK to Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. Nairobi's international aiport, Jomo Kenyatta is also well served by many of the main European hubs. From there, Sirai is easily accessible by a 50 minutes private air charter followed by a 30 minute drive. Guests who take an overnight flight from London Heathrow can expect to be at Sirai for a late breakfast. The lack of time difference means it is perfectly possible to come for a long weekend from Europe.

Sirai has been designed to have as small an environmental footprint as possible. This approach started with the build phase which used local materials and craftsmen as far as possible. Electricity is provided by solar panels and wind generation with back-up from diesel generators. Hot water is solar generated, again with generator back-up for the mornings, and the swimming pool is also solar heated. Rainwater and greywater are extensively harvested and used for irrigation around the site. Our water is from a private deep borehole fed by underground Mt Kenya streams and is purified through our state of the art water treatment plant.
